Shiga Prefecture is blessed with abundant water and lush natural surroundings, and is home to Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan.

 Long known as a center of cultural and economic advancement, this region is still home to traditional crafts with deep historical roots, such as “Shigaraki ware,” one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, and “Omi-jofu,” a high-quality hemp textile traditionpassed down since the Muromachi period.

 In addition, a wide variety of craftsmanship has been nurtured through the local climate and way of life, including silk textiles, raw silk floss (mattress filling), and wood carving.

Shiga’s unique materials, skills, and sensibilities continue to be carefully handed down by today’s artisans.
